The Best Nootropics for Gamers That Actually Work

Nootropics, commonly referred to as smart drugs by the media, are a class of drugs and supplements that have seen a recent surge in popularity amongst those seeking higher levels of productivity and have gained notoriety for their association with Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs. Nootropics come in many different forms; some are biological compounds found in nature, while others are synthetically designed to alter your brain chemistry for better cognitive function. Some have been adequately researched and are considered safe, while others are new, unresearched, and may have undesirable side effects. With the right guidance, many different benefits can be achieved through the use of nootropics for a variety of purposes and lifestyles including gamers, programmers, athletes, salespeople, executives, parents, etc. In this article, we’ll discuss the best nootropic supplements for gamers that are looking to gain a competitive edge through increased reaction time, decision-making, cognition, memory, concentration, and mental endurance.

I recently did a full 10-day test of TruBrain followed by a comprehensive ingredient breakdown and a full product review that I’ll link to here. TruBrain Boost is a 1 oz nootropic drink shot that contains nine carefully curated premium nootropic ingredients that work synergistically to provide cognitive benefits. TruBrain Boost is by far the highest quality and most effective formulated nootropic product currently available and is what I currently use every day unless I am testing another product. TruBrain Boost provides me with clean energy, wakefulness, reduced brain fog, increased reaction time, ability to think clearly, better memory, and overall improved cognition. As I mentioned in my full review of TruBrain, these benefits were most noticeable while in cognitively demanding situations that require quick thinking such as gaming, wrestling, work presentations, and social interactions. My game of choice is Dota 2,  a multiplayer online battle arena game that requires fast reaction time, execution of skills under stress, and real-time strategic thinking and planning. While on TruBrain Boost my improved performance in Dota 2 was undeniable. Throughout the 10 day test of TruBrain, I had a much higher game impact on my team, improved in-game stats such as gold-per-minute and K/D ratio, and my MMR (match-making ranking) increased from ~3475 to ~3700 as I won 21 total games and lost 12. My win-rate during this 10 day period of time was 64% compared to my average win-rate of 54%. Additionally, I felt that I was better able to effectively implement tactics I had just learned in coaching videos (shout-out to Speeed over at GameLeap). Lastly, I felt that I could maintain my focus for extended periods of time with some gaming sessions spanning around 6 to 7 hours straight. Aside from the direct benefits to my gaming performance, I also noticed substantial benefits to my athletic performance in wrestling, which also requires strategic thinking and execution of technical skills, as well as conversational improvements in stressful social interactions. The best part about TruBrain Boost is the total lack of side effects, which may not be true for all who take it, though it was for me and I am particularly sensitive to many supplements. Just because TruBrain Boost isn’t marketed directly towards gamers does not mean you should shy away from it as a gaming performance boosting supplement.

Genius Gamer

Genius Gamer is a pill containing a cocktail of B vitamins along with 8 nootropic ingredients specifically chosen with gamers in mind. Genius products are generally high-quality products in that they predominantly use branded ingredients in their formulas. Where Genius products can occasionally go wrong is in their actual ingredient selection. Some of their products “ingredient stuff” and have 15+ ingredients with no regard for how they may be redundant or interact negatively with each other. Genius Gamer is actually a decently formulated nootropic for gamers, although I do have a few issues with it. Genius Gamer is a stimulant-first approach to a gaming supplement, which may work well for some, but I personally try to limit stimulant use as tolerance and dependence can form over time. Also, stimulants usually make me crash pretty hard. They included two types of caffeine, one of which is an extended-release form, which helps with extended wakefulness and alertness. Then there is Theacrine and Dynamine, both of which are similar to caffeine in their structure and effects. Having four different stimulants in one supplement is a bit much for me, but may work for some people. Next is the B vitamin complex they included supports a range of health functions that are not necessarily related to gaming but are still nice to have in a supplement. Then, the two main nootropic ingredients for cognitive function that Genius selected are Tyrosine and Citicoline, both excellent choices, but both so grossly underdosed in this supplement that hey may as well not even be there. Lastly, there is a combination of Lutein and Zeaxanthin Isomers that is quite interesting and appear to be dosed properly. Both of these ingredients support eye health and function and supposedly combat eye-strain while gaming. Genius Gamer has great reviews from many who have experienced its benefits, though those who are sensitive to stimulants should be wary.

The combination of Caffeine and L-Theanine is one of the most popular, beginner-friendly nootropic stacks out there. Caffeine provides all sorts of mental and physical performance benefits, including increased wakefulness and concentration, increased adrenaline levels, faster reaction times, higher power output, higher aerobic and anaerobic endurance, and increased metabolic rates. L-Theanine is an amino acid most commonly found in green tea that provides numerous mental benefits when taken orally in concentrated doses. L-Theanine is highly synergistic with caffeine as it helps reduce anxiety and promotes relaxation. The two substances are often taken in conjunction with one another. Other benefits of L-Theanine include increased focus, improved attention span, and better sleep quality. L-Theanine is a heavily researched dietary supplement and generally regarded as safe by the FDA. When combined, Caffeine and L-Theanine work synergistically to increase focus while reducing anxiety. L-Theanine helps take the nervous edge off of caffeine use while keeping you from crashing. Many users report feeling a smooth flow of energy and focus when taking L-Theanine alongside Caffeine. There are multiple reputable Caffeine + L-Theanine brands available, however, we recommend going with Sports Research L-Theanine + Caffeine because it’s available on Amazon, plus it contains MCT oil which has been researched for benefits related to brain health and brain energy.
